Vieques to Culebra, where three sources disagree

Checked

The operator's FAQ says the route is not sold. Its rates page prices it at $2.00. The tourism board says charter. In practice it is four hours through Ceiba.

Nine miles of water separate Vieques and Culebra, and crossing it is harder than crossing to the mainland. Three official sources will tell you three different things about whether you can.

The three answers

The operator says the route is not sold. Its FAQ:

“Puerto Rico Ferry currently sells tickets for the following routes: San Juan <> Cataño / Ceiba <> Vieques / Ceiba <> Culebra”

Three routes. This is not one of them. Its routes and tickets menus lead to no page for it, and the current itinerary PDFs cover only the two Ceiba pairs. An older route page, linked from none of those menus, is still up at its own address: it heads the crossing “LAST SUNDAY OF THE MONTH”, says the service “operates the last Sunday of each month”, and links a timetable effective February 2023 with no Vieques-Culebra sailing in it.

The same operator prices it. On its rates page there is a VIEQUES CULEBRA column: adult 13–59 $2.00, children 4–12 $1.00, adults 60–74 $1.00, babies 0–3 and seniors 75+ free.

A fare table for a route the FAQ says is not sold.

The tourism board says neither. Discover Puerto Rico:

“Is there a ferry from Culebra to Vieques? Traveling between the two islands typically requires a charter flight or a private boat, as there is no direct public ferry service between them. The boat ride takes around 45 minutes to an hour, depending on conditions.”

What the fare column means for you

Nothing you can use. The VIEQUES CULEBRA column and that orphaned page are the only places on the operator’s site where the route appears: there is no current timetable and no ticket page — the operator’s buy-tickets page offers San Juan ↔ Cataño, Ceiba ↔ Vieques and Ceiba ↔ Culebra, and that is all. A fare with no sailing is not a way across.

What you should plan on: there is no sailing between these islands that you can book.

So you go back through Ceiba

Here is the arithmetic on the published weekday timetable for August to November 2026. This is our calculation, not a connection the operator sells or guarantees.

Vieques → Ceibadepart 10:00 AM, arrive about 11:00
Wait at Ceibaabout 90 minutes
Ceiba → Culebradepart 12:30 PM, arrive about 2:00 PM

About four hours door to door, to travel nine miles.

The alternatives are worse. The last Vieques → Ceiba weekday sailing is 9:30 PM and the first Ceiba → Culebra is 3:30 AM, so an evening arrival is not a routing that exists.

And there is no protection if the first leg slips:

“All ticket sales are FINAL, no refunds are allowed.”

Nor is there through-ticketing. You are buying two unrelated tickets, and the risk of the gap between them is entirely yours.

The thing that makes the gamble worse

Boarding is not first-come, first-served:

“Priority order for passenger boarding: a. Pregnant women, senior citizens (60 years of age or older); persons with disabilities and veterans. b. Bona fide residents of the municipality’s islands. c. Passengers with tickets purchased at www.puertoricoferry.com d. Passengers with tickets purchased at the terminal counter.”

A visitor with an online ticket sits third. On a busy sailing, having a ticket is not the same as having a seat — which matters much more when you are connecting than when you are simply going home.

Also note the five-ticket cap per transaction, which a two-island party with bags hits quickly.

Flying

Vieques Air Link serves Vieques (VQS), Culebra (CPX), Ceiba (NRR) and San Juan Isla Grande (SIG), and St. Thomas from Ceiba, so a routing between the islands exists on paper. Its own warning applies:

“All flights may have one or two stops before final destination.”

A hop that is 15 minutes in theory may route via Ceiba or Isla Grande in practice. The fares, the 25-pound baggage limit and the rest are on the flying page.

Our actual recommendation

Pick one island. Vieques or Culebra sets them side by side on what actually decides it.

They are not two halves of a destination. Vieques has the bio bay, the refuge, the free-roaming horses and the empty beaches. Culebra has Flamenco and the cays. Doing both on a week’s trip costs you the better part of two days in terminals to save nothing, because there is no version of this crossing that is quick.

If the bio bay is the reason for the trip, that settles it: Vieques, a night near new moon, and the tours that leave from the island.

If you have two weeks, or you are traveling between them for a reason that is not sightseeing, go through Ceiba in the middle of the day and leave the schedule slack. The full timetable is here.

Then plan the fun part

Quick answers

Is there a ferry from Vieques to Culebra?

No. Puerto Rico Ferry sells three routes — San Juan to Cataño, Ceiba to Vieques and Ceiba to Culebra — on its FAQ and its ticket page, with no current timetable for a crossing between the islands. Its rates page carries a Vieques-Culebra fare column with no sailing behind it, and an old route page that none of its menus link still points to a timetable from February 2023.

How do you get from Vieques to Culebra?

In practice, back through Ceiba. Take the ferry to Ceiba, wait, take the ferry out to Culebra. Discover Puerto Rico says the alternative is a charter flight or private boat.

How far apart are Vieques and Culebra?

Nine miles. Vieques Air Link describes Culebra as 17 miles east of the Puerto Rico mainland and nine miles north of Vieques.

Can you do Vieques and Culebra in one trip?

You can, but it costs you the better part of a day in transit each way through Ceiba, with no guaranteed connection. For most visits on a normal timetable, picking one island is the better trip.

Can you fly between Vieques and Culebra?

Vieques Air Link serves both airports, so a routing exists. It also warns that all flights may have one or two stops before the final destination, so a direct hop is not guaranteed.

How long does the boat take between the islands?

Discover Puerto Rico gives around 45 minutes to an hour for a private boat, depending on conditions. There is no scheduled service to time.
