The Ceiba terminal sits on the old Roosevelt Roads Navy base, not in a town, and
there is nowhere to stay at the pier. Where to sleep the night before comes
down to one thing: which boat you are on.
The boats that decide it
The first sailings out of Ceiba, 1 August to 30 November 2026 (official
timetables:
Vieques,
Culebra):
* The operator’s own footnote: on Tuesdays and Fridays that sailing leaves
at 3:45 AM.
The rules around them, from the operator’s route pages and
FAQ:
- Be at the terminal an hour before you sail. That is the instruction for
every sailing.
- The terminal opens one hour before the first departure of the day. With a
3:30 AM boat to Culebra every day, that is 2:30 in the morning.
- A ticket for the next boat has to be bought at least 15 minutes before it
leaves.
- Boarding closes 10 minutes before departure.
Every sailing of the day, both ways, is on
the ferry schedule.
From San Juan, a morning boat is a 6 a.m. start
How long the drive takes depends on who you ask. The operator says about an hour
from San Juan; Discover Puerto Rico, the tourism board, says about an hour and a
half. Routed on OpenStreetMap, SJU airport is 39 miles from the terminal and
72 minutes with no traffic, and Old San Juan 47 miles. Plan on 75 to 90
minutes, more in San Juan’s rush hour. Every other distance and drive time on
this page is routed the same way, to the terminal on Marina Drive, with the times
rounded up.
Add the operator’s hour at the terminal and the arithmetic is plain:
For the 8:30 and 9:00 boats, a San Juan hotel works if you do not mind the alarm.
For anything before them, the night belongs on the east coast.
When a night near the ferry earns its keep
- You want a pre-dawn boat. The 5:30 AM to Culebra lands in Dewey at about
7:00, hours ahead of the next ferry and the day boats, and
Flamenco Beach is at its best before eleven. From San Juan that sailing is a 3 a.m. start; from a bed in Ceiba it
is about four.
- You land at SJU in the evening and sail in the morning. Either drive out
that night or take the early start; the airport section below sets the two
side by side.
- You come home on one of the last boats. The last sailings off Vieques and
Culebra both leave at 9:30 PM, and with a crossing of an hour from Vieques and
an hour and a half from Culebra they land in Ceiba at about 10:30 and 11:00.
Driving on to San Juan puts you there around midnight.
Ceiba: closest, and no hotels
Ceiba’s town center is just over 5 miles from the terminal by road, around 20
minutes. Booking.com’s places in Ceiba itself are apartments and houses, several
of them advertising how close they are to the ferry. Its Ceiba list also carries
a few places just over the line in Fajardo, hotels among them.
That means a host, not a front desk. Before you book one for a late arrival or a
3 a.m. alarm, ask in writing how you get in after dark and how you get to the
terminal before dawn, and keep the answer.
Fajardo: the hotels
Fajardo, the larger town just north of Ceiba, has the hotels. Its center is
about 10 miles from the terminal, around 25 minutes.
El Conquistador Resort, at 1000 El Conquistador Avenue, is Fajardo’s big
resort: 677 rooms by its own count, an 18-hole golf course, a water park, and
Palomino, a 100-acre island kept for resort guests and members. It is about
13 miles from the terminal by road, close to 40 minutes, so it halves the
drive from San Juan rather than removing it.
Booking.com’s Fajardo list has the rest of the town’s beds, hotels and
apartments both.
Sleep in Fajardo, sail from Ceiba. The ferry left Fajardo for Ceiba in 2018,
and a great deal of published advice still sends people to the old pier.
The ferry page has the rest of what that advice
gets wrong.
Landing at SJU late
If your flight lands in the evening, the choice is a drive in the dark or a
later start.
- Sleep at the airport. San Juan Airport Hotel is inside Terminal D at Luis
Muñoz Marín, the only hotel in the airport itself. From there, the 8:30 AM to
Vieques or the 9:00 AM weekday boat to Culebra is the same 6 a.m. start as
anywhere in San Juan.
- Or skip the ferry. Cape Air flies from SJU to both islands, 25 minutes to
Vieques and 20 to Culebra.
The flying page has the fares and the
baggage rules, which are the catch.
- Or go to the east coast that night, 39 miles by road, and wake up 20 to 40
minutes from the boat.
Booking.com’s list for SJU covers the rest of the airport’s neighborhood,
Isla Verde’s beach hotels among them.
Getting from the bed to the boat
A rental car cannot board, so whatever you drive to Ceiba stays on the mainland.
There is paid parking at the terminal, and a week on the island is a week of
parking. The mistake that costs the most is a San Juan rental parked at Ceiba
for the whole trip, and
getting to the terminal sets
out what to do instead, including the operator’s own ground transport and its
catch. Book your island vehicle before you sail:
who rents what, and where.
Without a car, settle the pre-dawn ride to the terminal when you book the bed,
with the host or a taxi, not on the night.
Book in this order
The ferry first, because the boat sets the time and only a limited block of
non-resident seats is sold online ahead of each sailing. Then the bed the night
before it. Then the bed on the island:
where to stay on Vieques and Culebra.
